Joining Minster Playhouse in 2008 in “Panto of the Opera”, Nicola (Niki) Kelly is a very busy lady. She loves singing and acting and is making her directorial debut with “Stepping Out” in May 2012. Her favourite film line is from Brokeback Mountain where Jake Gyllenhaal says to Heath Ledger, “I wish I knew how to quit you”.
To date, she says her most memorable moment on stage was whilst playing an undertaker in “Searching for Doctor Branovic”, when she had to sit on a coffin! Later in the same scene, Terry Wood sprang out of the coffin, sending the lid and the audience’s nerves flying. Back in the spring of 2011, Niki asked the Playhouse committee if they would support her setting up a Youth Theatre section.
Having quickly got their agreement, she didn’t stop until it was a successful reality, starting with a week-long workshop in August 2011. Now organising regular half-term and holiday workshops with a team of MPH volunteers, is she resting on her laurels? Not a bit of it, she will also be directing her favourite play, Tim Firth’s “Calendar Girls” in 2013.
When asked what she likes best about MPH, she smiles and says there’s so much passion and talent, and she’s made some really great friends.
